Calgarians will finally get an opportunity to watch Raptors superstars and Team USA olympic gold medalists DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry hit the basketball court in person one month from now, as Calgary is scheduled to host an NBA preseason game between the Denver Nuggets and the Toronto Raptors on October 3rd at 7:00 PM (MT).
Both the general public and the organization itself have labelled The Raptors as ‘Canada’s team’ in recent years and the nickname seems to be sticking – the success of the Raptors’ ‘We the North’ campaign illustrates this further.
Winning is highly beneficial, obviously; The Toronto Raptors have certainly won their fair share of games lately. Last season, the team earned a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals and had 153 wins in regular season games over the last three years!
The Raptors have increasingly made their presence known throughout the country, most effectively by their preseason exhibition tours throughout Canada. Last year’s tour had stops in Montreal, Vancouver, and Ottawa. The last time the Raptors visited Alberta was back in 2008, when the Nuggets and Raptors clashed once again in Edmonton.
It’s been quite a long time since Calgary has seen any NBA basketball played within the city. The last one of its kind to occur in Calgary was back in 1996, when the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Raptors played in the second edition of the Naismith Cup.
In present day, the Raptors will hold a portion of their training camp in Vancouver, prior to hosting a preseason game there on October 1st, two days before the game in Calgary.
This preseason exhibition will definitely be a high-energy bout for all to enjoy. With more pro basketball games being held in cities without an NBA team like Calgary, kids with dreams of becoming a pro athlete will see that there is indeed chance for them – hopefully they’ll be inspired to pursue their athletic dreams in the future!
