Canadian Music Centre Jazz Focus Records Retrospective – Ironwood – FREE!
The estate of Philip Barker has bequeathed to the Canadian Music Centre the entire back inventory of Barker’s longtime pet jazz project, Calgary’s Jazz Focus Records. The record label was active between 1993 and 2007, released 36 titles by Canadian and American jazz musicians, and comprised offerings by pianist Jessica Williams, guitarist Herb Ellis, trombonist/pianist/composer Hugh Fraser (including his 1998 JUNO Award-winning CD In the Mean Time), Calgary pianist Brian Buchanan, and Edmonton saxophonist and festival organizer Kent Sangster, among others.
The Art of Viola Anderson – Ironwood Stage and Grill – FREE!
20 years ago, Calgary photographer and jazz music fan Viola Anderson was frequently seen with her camera in hand at performances around the city. Her candid shots captured much more than the image of the musician. They also caught an intimate glimpse of the transformation taking place within the artist in performance.
On view for the first time, a collection of the original black and white photographs shot and printed by Anderson, who passed away in April of this year, also gives us some insight into the history of Calgary’s jazz community. None of the local, national and international musicians were identified by the photographer, so the audience is invited to share their knowledge of names, dates and venues.
The Art of Jazz – Ironwood Stage and Grill – FREE!
Watch spontaneous creation as visual artists work their magic inspired by the sounds and sights of live jazz performance. Join us at the Ironwood on Sunday afternoon, November 15.
Finish the day with a tribute to old Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra:
